Why a Specialized Housewrap installer?
In the past housewrap has been thought of as a non-skilled task that really served very little purpose other than to give builders a quick dry-in that allowed them to proceed with other work on the inside. Utility rough-ins, insulation and even drywall could be performed before the exterior cladding was complete. Often the bothersome chore was passed to the low man on the
Framing, or siding crew, positions that tend to have a high turnover and consequently resulted in poor and inconsistent housewrap installations.
As mold and water-intrusion lawsuits have skyrocketed, the science and requirements of a homes “envelope” system has followed, the challenge is how do we keep water out of the structure and still allow it to breath or in technical terms to release the vapor that is generated from within. If you’ve ever worn a nonbreathing rubber rainsuit in the heat you know how quickly you will begin to sweat on the inside even though it keeps the rain 100% out. If the condensation (that your home generates every day) is trapped in that way the result eventually will be mold. Now consider a rainsuit made from a hi-tech material like gortex, it will hold rain 100% out, but will also release vapor (which causes sweat) from the inside, keeping you cool, dry and comfortable. IF PROPERLY INSTALLED a housewrap and flashing system should give a home or commercial building that same type of performance.
The Insurance industry has been pounded with claims concerning mold and water-intrusion, in response they have pushed for higher standards and codes.
Regarding installation techniques. Building officials are gradually coming into compliance, but bad installs are still creating unnecessary liabilities for builders and homeowners everyday!
Here are just a few examples of poor housewrap installation that could easily result in water-intrusion:
